RYÛ, Koide. Dôkan shiroku [Instructions on Personal and Unfounded Notes]. Tenpo 10, 1839.
5 volumes, 8o (253 x 180 mm). 21 full-page hand-colored wood engravings. Original patterned wrappers, printed title label on covers; chemise; later cloth folding case. Provenance: Shuzô Kure, Professor of anatomy at Tokyo; Jean Blondelet (sold Tajan, Paris, 23 October 2001, lot 31).
FIRST EDITION of a treatise on anatomy illustrated with 21 delicately hand-colored woodcuts. The author, Koide Ryo or Koide Kiminori, states in his preface that he was trained in traditional Japanese medicine but that he had undertaken 12 dissections in Osaka between 1832 and 1836. Since prior Japanese anatomical texts were based upon no more than a single dissection, this treatise was based on more hands-on experience than prior works.
