Lot Essay

Display stands have played an important role in the presentation of art objects for centuries. Some of the finest examples made from materials such as jade, ivory, zitan and other rare woods rivaled the works of art they were used to supplement. The current example, carved to mimic a natural cluster of roots, would have likely been found on the scholar's desk.
