Lot Essay

The shape of this jade vessel is based on the alms bowl (patra) form. It is also very similar to the shape of a bronze censer illustrated in Jin yu qing yan: Yang Ping Zhen Xian Sheng Zhen Cang Ming Qing Tong Lu (Gold Jade Green Smoke: Mr. Yang Ping Zhen's Collection of Ming and Qing Bronze Censers), National Museum of History, 1996, p. 213, no. 137 and p. 212, no. 136, which is cast with a Qianlong mark. A dark green jade alms bowl inscribed with sutras, of the Qianlong period, in the Qing Court Collection is illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 42 - Jadeware (III), Hong Kong, 1995, p. 145, no. 117. See, also, the jade bowl of this shape carved with a dragon chasing a flaming pearl amidst clouds and dated to the 17th century included in the exhibition, Chinese Jade, Spink, London, June, 1998, p. 34, no. 52.
