A FINELY CARVED BLACK AND WHITE JADE SEAL
17TH/18TH CENTURY
Of square section, the top utilizing the black area of the stone to depict a dragon with a contorted slender body grasping a lingzhi sprig in its mouth as it crawls beneath the arched handle so that its front and back legs are on either side and its head rests on top, the lower section utilizing the white area of the stone

Lot Essay

This seal appears to be the mate to the very similar black and white jade seal of the same size carved on top with a pair of feline beasts sold in "Important Chinese Jades from the Personal Collection of Alan and Simone Hartman", in our Hong Kong rooms, 28 November 2006, lot 1355.
