A RARE PAIR OF PAINTED ENAMEL LOBED OCTAGONAL SWEETMEAT BOXES AND COVERS
18TH CENTURY
The circular flat top of each box decorated in the center with a gilt shou character encircled by a border formed by five bats (wufu) and in the outer field the Eight Buddhist Emblems (bajixiang) alternating with leafy flower sprigs, the latter decoration repeated on the lobed sides of the cover and box, within ruyi borders, all in a famille rose palette reserved on a blue ground, the interior fitted with a tray of conforming outline that holds a circular tray surrounded by eight petal-shaped trays, all painted with lotus sprays on a turquoise ground

Lot Essay

Another painted enamel box of this type dated to the Qianlong period, also fitted with sweetmeat trays, but of lobed square shape, was included in the exhibition, Tributes from Guangdong to the Qing Court, Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1987, p. 87, pl. 49, and on p. 132 is described as being representative of painted enamels produced in Guangzhou.
