Lot Essay

The design on this dish is inspired by Ming prototypes, such as the Chenghua dish in The National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Special Exhibition of Ch'eng-hua Porcelain, Taipei, 1976, no. 15.

Similar Qianlong-marked dishes of this popular theme have been published. See S. Jenyns, Later Chinese Porcelain, London, 1904, pl. XCV; and Gulland, Chinese Porcelain, vol. II, London, 1918, no. 860. Another pair is illustrated in The Tsui Museum of Art; Chinese Ceramics IV; Qing Dynasty, Hong Kong, 1995, no. 79. See, also, the pair from the Doris Duke Collection sold in these rooms, 21 September 2004, lot 289.
