The scenes appear to be inspired by the fourteenth century novel, The Water Margin, (Shuihu zhuan), a frequent source of decoration in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. A lengthy novel about a group of Song dynasty outlaws, many of whom were forced to live outside the law by corrupt Song officials, it was considered analogous to corruption of officials during the late Ming dynasty, and its printing was officially banned by the Chongzhen emperor in 1642.
