Lot Essay

While this form is based on earlier bronze shapes, its shape is somewhat unsuited to the ceramic medium because of its wide, flaring rim. It is for this reason that it is unusual to find zhadou of this large size.

A slightly smaller celadon-glazed example, dated to the 18th century, is illustrated in the catalogue, An Exhibition of Important Chinese Ceramics from the Robert Chang Foundation, Christie's, London, 2 - 14 June 1993, pp. 158-9, no. 74. An example of a smaller, blue-glazed zhadou from the Qianlong period was included in the exhibition, Qing danse youci tezhan (A Special Exhibition of Qing Monochrome Glazed Porcelain), National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1981, p. 101, no. 47.
