AN UNUSUAL GE-TYPE VASE
18TH CENTURY
With compressed body below two bulbous ribs at the base of the tall neck which is flanked by a pair of simplified openwork handles, covered overall with a pale greyish blue-green glaze suffused with black ('iron wire') crackle, the base with a similar glaze with a finer network of crackle and the foot covered with a dark brown dressing

Lot Essay

In the Qianlong period, Song dynasty stonewares, particularly those of the Ge, Guan and Ru type, were very highly regarded by the emperor. Not only did the emperor collect Song dynasty examples of Ge ware, he also commissioned new porcelain with a similar glaze. This vase, produced during the resurgence in popularity of Song wares, imitates the Ge originals.
