Hermitage, La Chapelle--Vintage 1970
Rhône. Believed French-bottled "Mise en bouteilles dans la Region de Production"
Six capsules corroded. Slightly bin-soiled labels. Levels: eight 3cms or better, one 3.5 and three 4.5cms below base of corks
Tasting Note: I was lucky to buy early and enjoy the 1970 multiple times. It has always been a fabulous La Chapelle. The showing at the Jaboulet tasting was totally in keeping with the way this wine has always performed. In a blind tasting it could easily be mistaken for a first-growth Pauillac. The dark garnet colour reveals light amber at the edge. The spectacular aromatics (always a characteristic of very ripe vintages of La Chapelle) exhibit tell-tale Asian spice, soy, smoked meats, chocolate, pepper, blackberry, and cassis fruit scents. Lush, ripe, full-bodied, and oozing with concentration and glycerin, this expansive, voluptuously-textured La Chapelle is fully mature, sumptuous, and gorgeously pure and long. The perfectly integrated tannin and acidity are nearly obscured by the wine's flesh, succulence, and intensity. Drink it over the next decade. 94 Points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 129, June 2000.
