A SELECTION OF RARE YQUEM, INCLUDING THE 1947 AND 1959 VINTAGES
Lying in Weybridge, Surrey (EHD)
Château d'Yquem--Vintage 1927
Sauternes, 1er grand cru classé
Damaged, torn and bin-soiled labels. Level mid/upper-shoulder. Dark colour
Tasting Note: Three notes. First, recorked in 1996, and tasted two years later: warm mahogany amber; curious smell but better on the palate. Next, a bottle shipped post-war to New York, sold to a merchant in Chicago, bought by a collector in San Diego who later auctioned it in New York when it was purchased by my son as a birthday present and consumed en famille in 1999: deep; caramelised nose yet rich and delicious. Most recently, a bottle with good upper-shoulder level: very deep amber; sweet, raisiny, toffee-like but harmonious nose; medium-sweet, surprisingly rich with an even more surprising good aftertaste, preserved by its acidity. Last tasted Feb 2003. At best *** M.B.
