Lot Essay

This scroll is registered as Juyo Bijutsuhin (Important Art Object) by the Cultural Ministry of Japan, with a certificate dated 1937.12.24.

Emperor Go-Kashiwabara was the first son of Emperor Go-Tsuchimikado and became the 104th emperor of Japan. He enjoyed poetry and music and compiled anthologies, including the Hakugyokushu and the Kinkashu. The poems shown here are included in the anthology Hakugyokushu as no. 765 of vol. 4, autumn section 1 (ducks), no. 915 of vol. 5, autumn section 2 (moon), and no. 1787 of the volume of miscellaneous poems.

Ducks:
Kamo no fusu atosae miete urakareno
Sawa eno chihara kakeso sukunaki

Haru no mizu michiteshi hodoya kurabemashi
Kamo tatsu sawano fukaki aware ni (ducks)

Moon:
Tsukewataru onoe no kane no akegata to
Matsu ni hedatete tsukizo yofukaki

Onorekoso tsuinimo michinu matsu narame
konomani usuki tsuki no irokana (moon)

Clothes:
Tabigoromo ioruru tabini tachikaen
Sono orihushiya omoi itsuran

Miyako nito utsutsuni kaesu minarame
Yoru no koromo wa chigiri nakutomo (clothes)
