A Five-Case Lacquer Inro
Edo Period (19th century), signed Kajikawa and sealed Ei
Lacquered in gold and lack takamaki-e with Raijin, the god of thunder beating drums on a storm cloud with flashes of lightning, while in pale togidashi, people beneath the clouds run for shelter from the storm, the sky embellished with hirame, interiors nashiji; fitted with a silvered-metal disc ojime with a gilt rabbit on both sides

Lot Essay

The figures fleeing the storm are cleverly rendered in silhouette in togidashi, visible only in certain light. This makes them appear as if they are being illuminated by a flash of lightning during a sudden evening thunder shower.
