Lot Essay

The ship flies the flag of the States General at its mainmast; beneath on its mainsail is the coat-of-arms of the Order of the Garter. The flag at its foremast may be the personal flag of George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham; on the foresail beneath are the Stuart royal arms. The significance of this combination of flags and coat-of-arms has not been established; it may be that it alludes to Buckingham's embassy in the winter of 1625 to The Hague, where was signed in December the Treaty of The Hague, between Great Britain, Denmark and the United Provinces
