Lot Essay

Formerly attributed to Paul Bril, the present lot is rather to be dated to circa 1650 and possibly inspired by the etching by Van Nieulandt, number four in the series of Views of Rome (Hollstein, 9).

The picture gives an impression of Rome before the major works by Bernini were executed, notably on the Vatican and on the Ponte Sant'Angelo
