Lot Essay

Dating from the Amsterdam period of the artist; the artist moved to that city in 1674. As pointed out by Kuretzky, op.cit., p. 26, Ochtervelt's style then underwent a change towards softer colours and more classical type of figures under the influence of Gerard de Lairesse

The subject of a woman pouring from a window appears also in a print by H. Barij after Frans van Mieris (O. Naumann, Frans van Mieris the Elder, II, 1981, pp. 9/10, pl. 3). From the accompanying text it is understood that the scene is not just the pouring of a liquid but should be seen as a metaphor for loosing one's honour
