As pointed out by Ingrid de Jager in the catalogue of the exhibition Rotterdamse Meesters uit de Gouden Eeuw, 1994, p. 226, Sonjé's later works are influenced by Jan Both. The characteristics of his style from this period are the dominant rocks and large trees which are used as a repoussoir. The present lot is to be dated circa 1670/75 cf. the painting in the Fondation Custodia, Paris (op.cit., p. 226, no. 48, with ill. in colour p. 117)
