Lot Essay

The present two reliefs fit in neatly with a series of engraved female subjects executed in ivory by the Flemish sculptor François van Bossuit (1635-1692). The engraved 'flecking' of the background is also characteristic of his work (see Tardy, Les Ivoires - Evolution décorative du Ier siècle à nos jours, Paris, 1972, pp. 111, 112 and 115).
