The Parisian bronzier Henry Vian specalised exclusively in gilt-bronze, especially light fittings, and produced articles of the highest quality, so much so that the style of his casting and gilding can often be mistaken for earlier work. The firm's ateliers were located in the hôtel Salé (now the Musée Picasso) on the rue de Thorigny in the Marais.

The pentagonal Château Saint-Fargeau was built in 1453 by Antoine Chabannes on the site of a much earlier fortress. It is perhaps best known for its occupancy two hundred years later by the wealthy Anne-Marie Louise d'Orléans, 'La Grande Madamoiselle', first cousin of Louis XIV exiled there for five years. In 1715 the château was acquired by Michel Robert Lepeletier, in whose family it remained until 1968.
