Lot Essay

Born in Aguascalientes, Jesús Fructuoso Contreras (1866-1902) studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City before moving to Paris were he won a medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle and a Grand Prix in 1900.

Here Contreras can be seen to adapt his popular marble figure of L'Éveil, concentrating his considerable skill on a bust depicting the nymph reaching out from an intentionally roughly-hewn marble background.
