Lot Essay

This model of Louis XVI style table is usually by the firm of Donald Ross, which exhibited at the 1851 Great Exhibition and held premises at 13 Denmark Square, Soho during the third quarter of the 19th century. For many years an identical table from the Jones Collection at the Victoria & Albert museum was mistakenly thought to be 18th century and attibuted to Pierre Garnier. It may be that Donald Ross supplied other makers as well as retailers, as another example is known to be stamped Gillow and one of the present pair bears the stamp for the renowned London maker/retailer Edwards & Roberts.
