Lot Essay

This painting represents a pinnacle of Bundi painting towards the end of the 17th century, when many talented painters were available to Rajput patrons coming from embattled Deccani courts as well as Mughal artists released by the imperial ateliers due to the emperor's puritanical tastes. S.C. Welch names Rao Bhao Singh (1659-1682) as the probable patron. With bold design, bright color, and delicate finesse, it is highly successful in its lyrical sophistication yet iconic simplicity.
