For a figure of Buddha of identical proportions and with closely related treatment of the 'foldless' drapery, see R.C. Sharma, Buddhist Art, Mathura School, 1995, fig. 126, and p. 204. According to the author, this represents a rare Mathura precursor of the Gupta period Sarnath idiom of foldless drapery, as the treatment of the sanghati with refined folds remained predominant in Mathura. It thus represents a rare confluence of Kushan and Gupta art, successfully blending new and old formulae.
