A bronze Jain shrine
India, Gujarat, 11th/12th Century
Very finely cast in openwork with the principal image of a Tirthankara seated in dhyanasana on a throne supported by elephants and lions with a goddess at center, framed by apsaras and with a tiered conical parasol above flanked by confronted elephants and riders, the outer border with numerous seated and standing Jinas in architectural niches, the stepped pedestal with a frieze of diminuitive figures, the arched framework crested by fluid scrollwork, with a rich brown patina

This bronze shrine is remarkable for the complex openwork casting and vivid detail. It is cast in two pieces, with the large surrounding arch separately cast and adjoined.
