The chairs are designed in the Louis Quatorze Roman fashion, popularised around 1700 by the Livres d'Appartments issued by Daniel Marot (d. 1752) 'architect' to William III with their triumphal-arched backs and splats richly fretted with 'Venus' shells above vases that are displayed in ribbon-scrolled lozenged compartments that are wreathed by Roman acanthus. Splats of this pattern featured on a set of chairs, formerly at Underley Hall, Kirby Lonsdale (Penrith Farmer's and Kidd's sale at Underley Hall 12-15 September 1945, lot 467; and exhibited by Edward Nield at the Antique Dealer's Fair 1947). A set of six chairs of the present pattern, but with different front legs, was sold anonymously, Phillip's, London, 5 October 1993, lot 44.
