Lot Essay

Philip Thomason's Cudworth workshop has specialised for over twenty years in architectural stoneware. This chimneypiece was privately commissioned as a one-off model, executed in the manner of Eleanor Coade's Lambeth manufactory and incorporating the unusual tablet and frieze inspired by the work of the mid 18th century workshop of Sir Henry Cheere (1703-81).
The 'rococo-pastoral' tablet copies a design by Cheere, number twenty-four, amongst a group of twenty-eight watercolour and ink designs by Cheere (V.& A. prints and drawings archive, D.715 (13)-1887).
