THOMAS EDWARD LAWRENCE (1888-1935)
Seven Pillars of Wisdom. [Oxford: privately printed by the Oxford Times for the author, 1922]--A broadsheet leaf printed on the recto only in 2 columns, extracted from one of 8 copies printed (282 x 218mm). (Folded and slightly creased.) Provenance: Dr Lionel Dakers CBE (1924-2003).
A LEAF FROM ONE OF THE EIGHT COPIES OF THE 'OXFORD' EDITION OF SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM; of the eight copies printed, one was destroyed, one was disbound into individual leaves (including this) and four of the remaining 6 are in institutional collections. This leaf bears the text of all but the last 1½ paragraphs of chapter XVI, and corresponds to chapter XIV, pp. 76-79 of the 'Subscriber's' edition, beginning 'So mixed was the company ... ' and ending '... the general rights of all Arabs to national existence, and'. The text on this leaf corresponds quite closely to that of the 'Subscriber's' edition, with some variations; one of the more interesting is the omission of comments in the 1922 text describing German diplomatic policy towards the Ottoman empire and its consequences for Turkish relations with Armenia and Arabia, which Lawrence considered one of the prime motivations of the Arab Revolt -- 'Some Englishmen, of whom Kitchener was chief, believed that a rebellion of Arabs against Turks would enable England, while fighting Germany, simultaneously to defeat her ally Turkey' (Introduction, 'Subscriber's' edition). Cf. O'Brien A034.
