SLAVERY AND ITS ABOLITION

CLARKSON, Thomas (1760-1846). Thoughts on the Necessity of Improving the Condition of the Slaves in the British Colonies, with a view to their ultimate emancipation. London: Richard Taylor, 1823. 8° (220 x 140mm). Unopened. (First two leaves reinforced, light soiling). Modern boards. FIRST EDITION of Clarkson's 'most powerful work' (Slavery, Abolition and Emancipation, vol. III, p. 82). Sabin 13497.

An Abstract of the Evidence delivered before a Select committee of the House of Commons in the Years 1790, and 1791; on the part of the Petitioners for the Abolition of the Slave-Trade. London: James Phillips, George Yard, 1791. 8° (225 x 140). Large woodcut folding plate depicting a plan of a slave ship, folding map. Uncut. (Minor tear in title, neat tear in plate, a few small spots, lightly dust-soiled, neat tear in plate.) Modern boards.

CLARKSON. The History of the Rise and Progress, and Accomplishment of the Abolition of the African Slave-Trade by the British Parliament. London: R. Taylor and col. for Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme, 1808. 2 volumes, 8°, (spotted). Non-uniform 19th-century half calf (somewhat worn, front cover of vol. I detached). FIRST EDITION of Clarkson's invaluable history. Sabin 13486 (which seems to call for a leaf after vol. II title, absent here) -- and 5 other works on the slave-trade and its abolition, including a presentation copy of Clarkson's Strictures on a Life of William Wilberforce, London: 1838.

Clarkson was instrumental in detailing the most shocking aspects of slavery, including the publication of a plan of a slave-ship, showing the inhumane over-crowding, which was used in the abolition debate in Parliament. (10)
