Lot Essay
Identified by Bonifacio del Carril in 1966, who gave the picture its title 'Carrera Cuadrera', indicating that it represents a military encampment near to Montevideo, and mentioned by Beemelmans in 1979 in an article desribing Rugendas's drawings of soldiers in Uruguay. Del Carril's title was adopted by Diener in the catalogue raisonné. 'The technique of this oil painting fits with Rugendas's works, done during his stay in Buenos Aires and Montevideo, such as 'Gauchos y caballos salvajes' ('Gauchos and wild horses' -- cat. nr AU-O-11) or some of the late versions of 'El Rapto' (cat. nrs AC-O-7 and 8). Consequently it should be dated 1845.' (Pablo Diener, private communication, August 2007)
