Lot Essay

President of the Alpine Club from 1896-98, Pilkington was an outstanding mountaineer with many first ascents and guideless climbs to his name. He and his brother completed the second ascent of La Meije followed by the Gabelhorn in 1876, the first guideless ascent of Pic Roseg in 1882, and the Mönch in 1883. His studies of the Campiglio district were exhibited at the Alpine Club in 1893.
