A GREY POTTERY FIGURE OF A WARRIOR WITH SHIELD, Han Dynasty
Shown with his right leg kneeling, his right arm raised as if in readiness to throw a spear (now missing), his other side protected by the elongated shield hooked over the extended thumb of his left hand, wearing a short tunic over full pantaloons, his face with sharply defined exaggerated details, large ears below a flat cap, traces of red and white pigment and slip on the knife-pared, dark grey body (some restoration)

Lot Essay

A similar kneeling figure is in the Brundage Collection in the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, included in the exhibition catalogue, Art of the Han, China Institute, 1979, no. 27.

The result of Oxford thermoluminescence test no 766r36 is consistent with the dating of this lot.
