V.O.C Portolan Chart. Untitled manuscript chart of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, pen and ink on vellum, [Amsterdam: after 30 October 1643], 290 x 305mm. (Several holes, some damage to margins.)

EARLY CARTOGRAPHICAL DEPICTION OF SINGAPORE. A remarkable fragment from a larger V.O.C chart of the Dutch West Indies, including Ceylon, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and the east coast of the Malay peninsular, reaching to Singapore ('Straet Sincapura') and the northern part of Sumatra. Towns are labelled in red, coastlines outlined in yellow and green, while rhumb lines are green and red. An area marked 'Neptunis verongeluckt' off the India coast shows where the V.O.C. vessel Neptunis sank. This occurred on 30 October 1643. Joan Blaeu succeeded his father in the hydrographic office of the V.O.C. office in 1638.
