Neerlandsch-Indië Teekeningen van Jhr. J.C. Rappard. Leiden: A.W. Sijthoff, 1881-1885.
4 vols., 2° (405 x 300mm). 4 lithotint general title-pages, 4 printed part titles, lists of plates, 103 chromolithographic plates from watercolours by Rappard mounted on heavy paper, the 4-part set comprising: Batavia with text by van Rees, and Buitenzorg, Java and De Buitenbezittengen by Perelaer, each with their full complement of plates. (Some text leaves stained at margin, a few plates slightly browned.) Publisher's morocco-backed red cloth, bevelled edges, elaborately decorated in black, silver and gilt (spines rubbed or chipped, one torn at head).
COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST EDITION of this immensely popular work by two of the best known nineteenth-century writers on Indonesia. From his arrival in Indonesia in 1842 Jhr. J.C. Rappard (1824-1898) specialised in painting topographical views and depicting European social life in Indonesia. Many of these colour plates were made from those paintings but many were created in Leiden by Sijthoff from photographs or existing prints. This was just the beginning of the age of photomechanical printing when the photographer began to replace both the artist and the artist-engraver in book illustration. Haks & Maris p.219; Bastin & Brommer p.46, notes 687-688.
