Half titles, 2 folding engraved maps (spotted throughout, a few small stains). Contemporary half calf, flat spines ruled and decorated in gilt, green lettering pieces (a little rubbed).
FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH, valued 'by contemporaries for its contribution to the geographical knowledge of central Asia' (DNB). Forster undertook his remarkable overland journey from Calcutta to Europe in 1782 to 1784, travelling through Jammu to Kashmir, Kabul, Herat, Persia, across the Caspian Sea, and thence to Russia. This journey traced back, to a large extent, the route of Alexander in his pursuit of Bessus. (3)
