Lot Essay

Duff arrived in Port Elizabeth in 1840 where he taught drawing and advertised for work as a tutor or secretary. He walked to Cape Town in 1846 where he plied a trade in portraits of the locals primarily for passengers of visiting ships. His Trip to Swellendam and back by another Route was published in Cape Town in 1860, illustrated with
sketches by Duff under his nom-de-plume Terry Byrne.
