Lot Essay

H.M.S. Assistance was a "Portland" class 50-gun 4th rate built in Liverpool and launched in 1781. Her wartime service against France included the capture of the French frigate Elizabeth off Cape Henry, Virginia on 28th August 1796 which she then escorted into Halifax, Nova Scotia.

The artist joined the Navy in 1789 and was stationed in the West Indies. Appointed Lieutenant in 1795, he served on the sloop Shark but transferred into the Assistance in 1795.
