DUCRU BEAUCAILLOU

The 50 hectare terroir of Ducru Beaucaillou is known as one of Bordeaux's fairest. Nestled atop a plateau in the commune of St.-Julien with stunning views of the Gironde estuary below, Durcu Beaucaillou lies on a bed of large gravel stones with deep pockets of alluvial soil and clay deposits. The name of the estate, in fact, is translated as "Beautiful pebbles" in reference to its magnificent site.
Though officially listed as a "Deuxième Cru" in the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux, Ducru Beaucaillou is an esteemed member of the more informal "Super Seconds" grouping whose members have the potential to outperform even First Growths on occasion.

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou--Vintage 1978
Saint-Julien, 2me cru classé
Levels: top shoulder or better
"An outstanding 1978, Ducru-Beaucaillou's effort displays a fragrant, well-developed bouquet of licorice, earth, black currants, and underbrush. Rich for a 1978, with none of the vegetal character now found in many wines of this vintage, this fully mature, medium-bodied wine exhibits soft tannin, excellent concentration and purity, and a sweet, elegant finish. Anticipated maturity: now-2010. Last tasted 3/97." Robert Parker, Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition #B1 (Jan 1998)
