The glass shades display another example of Gallé's fascination with the subtleties of light and the ability of changing light conditions to generate different moods and effects. In this instance, as demonstrated in the catalogue illustrations, the shades emit a red glow when illuminated, alternatively when light falls on the glass they appear opaque and mottled in greens, browns and dark blues simulating aquatic foam.
