Lot Essay

The present painting by an artist active in the circle of Francesco Montelatici, known as Cecco Bravo, depicts the punishment of Cupid. While he sleeps, Cupid's mother Venus steals the bow and arrows with which Cupid causes so much mischief. The three female figures at right conspiring in the punishment may represent Diana's nymphs, known for their chastity and therefore often Cupid's targets.

The present composition can be compared to Bravo's own work on stylistic grounds: the energetic brushstroke and soft, Leonardesque sense of light and shadow are typical of the artist's style.
