Lot Essay

Amongst collectors, the reference 6238 is often referred to as the "Pre-Daytona". The reference 6238 is the immediate predecessor of the reference 6239, the first Cosmograph Daytona released by Rolex. It was produced from the early 1960s to circa 1967 in stainless steel and 18K gold, as well as a small series in 14k gold destined for the North American market. The present watch is a rare variant with a black matte dial of the third series of production of this reference.

This model is described and illustrated in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, p. 288.
