A CHAMBERLAIN'S WORCESTER SALMON-GROUND CRESTED SUPPER SET
Circa 1800, purple script Chamberlain's Worcester mark to the four dishes
Painted en grisaille and in black with the Pierrepont crest and gilt 'WP' monogram, the wide border gilt with trellis within a band of paterae and foliate scrolls similar to the pattern on the previous lot, comprising:
A footed tureen and cover, 10½ in. (26.5 cm.) wide
Four fan-shaped dishes and covers in two shapes, 10¾ in. (26 cm.) and 11¼ in. (28.5 cm.) wide
Together with:
A modern wooden "lazy susan" tray large enough to accomodate the full set (11)

Lot Essay

See Anonymous sale, Christie's, London, 9 February 1981, lot 109 for a set of 6 small plates and Sotheby's, New York, 16 October 1987, lot 3132 for a further 12 small plates, all likely from the same supper set as the present serving dishes. The gilt monogram 'WP' must be for a William Pierrepont, Pierrepont being the family name of the dukes of Kingston-upon-Hull and William that of several members of the family.
