A LATE CORINTHIAN POTTERY PYXIS AND LID ATTRIBUTED TO THE FINE-SILHOUETTE GROUP
LATE 6TH CENTURY B.C.
The globular body decorated with a frieze of sphinxes, sirens and lions between stylized foliate motifs with palmette and scrolls, dotted rosettes in the field, bordered by dotted bands, rays above the foot and tongues on the shoulder, concentric rings on underside of ring foot, the flattened raised rim with S-pattern, the lid decorated with bands of linked dots, double dots and rays, the flat knob with swirling star motif; and a Corinthian aryballos, the body with a quatrefoil of lotuses and buds, a profile female head on the handle with a six-spoked wheel below, hatching on the rim overhang, a rosette around the mouth, perhaps by the Liebieghaus Group, circa early 6th Century B.C.

Provenance
Formerly in the collection of Henry Wallis (1830-1916).
In later life the Pre-Raphaelite artist, Wallis, became a noted scholar and collector of antiquities; his publications included works on Egyptian, Classical, Medieval and Islamic art. Wallis travelled widely in the Mediterranean and Egypt, where he met the archaeologist Sir W. M. Flinders Petrie.
