Romanée-Conti(1)
"Medium ruby color. Initially, this is aromatically tight and closed but after 2 hours in the glass, it absolutely explodes from the glass with a breath taking panoply of Asian spices, exotic fruit aromas and a touch of earth followed by rich, lush, almost opulent flavors that melt in the mouth and coat the palate with a layer of velvet on the fantastically long finish. This is a dramatic wine in every sense of the word yet it's not at all showy but rather discreet and understated. I particularly like the sense of inner power and purity of expression and this is as good a wine as I ever hope to drink. It should last for another 50 years and if you ever have the chance, don't miss it! Consistent notes." BH
La Tâche(3)
"Not tasted until the mid-1990s, first at the Luzern tasting. La Tâche was in the 12th and last 'flight' which included Ch Latour, Ch Le Pin, Ch Pétrus, La Turque, Giacosa's Barbaresco Riserva Speciale and a super Syrah from Australia, Roman Bratasiuk's Clarendon Hill. It showed well: fairly deep, rich 'legs'; curiously exotic; sweet, fruit-laden, 'beetroot' Pinot grip (I did, after a struggle, identify it). Two years later, at Wagner's La Tâche vertical in Zurich: richness, extract, noting an earthy fragrance, opening up perfectly; sweet, full-body, fruit and all the component parts. Last tasted April 1998***(**) Approaching full maturity, but long life predicted." MB, Vintage Wine
Richebourg(2)
"High-toned fruit with fresh, bright blackberry fruit aromas and the barest trace of secondary character to the tight, very ripe, beautifully complex flavors. There is still quite a bit of tannin still to resolve though this has excellent density of extract and solid balance. Rich, long and impressive..." BH
Romanée-Saint-Vivant(3)
"Extremely rich and ripe with explosive aromas of Vosne spice, earth and only a touch of secondary nuance followed by big, indeed even robust flavors that show good muscle but no rusticity and while this displays only a bit of the classic RSV velvet, this character will undoubtedly become more pronounced with age as there is plenty of mid-palate density. Quite long and still very much of a baby, the '90 RSV is most promising. I would try again in 2010 but this will live for 30 years, perhaps longer. Multiple and consistent notes." BH
Grands-Echézeaux(1)
Deep purple-red, with spectacularly complex aromas (black fruits, undergrowth). This is richly structured, with plenty of flesh, ripe tannins and magnificent length. AH
Echézeaux(2)
"Obviously roasted yet intense and pure black fruits introduce big, quite structured flavors underpinned by a solid tannic structure. The finish is long, rich and wonderfully complex. A terrific example of DRC Echézeaux." BH
