A FRENCH CARVED BONE BUST TYPE CHESS SET
DIEPPE, LATE 18TH EARLY 19TH CENTURY
Depicting the French versus the Moors, the kings and queens holding sceptres, the bishops wearing bi-corn hats, the knights as cavalry men wearing the Revolutionary cap and fingers pointing downwards, the Moorish pawns with drop-earrings, the rooks as imbricated turrets, the French pawns as gentlemen officers
The king -- 3¼in. (8.2cm.) high; the pawn -- 2¼in. (5.7cm.) high

The battles between the French and their colonial possessions were among the popular themes used by the French Dieppe ivory carvers during the late 18th century and 19th century. The Chevalier de Boufflers, the Governor of Senegal from 1785 to 1788, is portrayed as the pawn. See Chess: East and West, Past and Present, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 1968, fig. 64.
