Lot Essay

Despite being dated AH 1107/1695 AD it is more likely that this carpet was actually woven in the second half of the 19th century. The stepped blue cartouche in the field contains the word jawza which when translated means 'the constellation of Gemini' and is flanked on either side by the symbol of 'Saggitarius'. There appears to be no immediate explanation behind these astrological symbols combined with the strange mythical figures issing from the waq waq tree, (Hali, Issue 35, July/August/September 1987, pp.54-55, fig.5).
