The inscription reads: al-'izz al-da'im wa al-iqbal wa al-thana, (Perpetual Glory, Prosperity and Praise).

The form and layout of the decoration of this penbox are closely related to those of one in the Aga Khan Museum Collection (Spirit and Life, exhibition catalogue, London, 2007, no.90, p.127).
