Kitab al-Sarf is a section of the famous work of the Malikite scholar 'Abd al-Salaam ibn Sa'id ibn Habib al-Tanuhi Sahnun, whose Kitab al-Mudawwanah al-Kubra - a famous text of the Malikite school of law - comprised a set of opinions given by 'Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Qasim al-Utaqi in response to questions posed by Sahnun. 'Abd al-Rahman's answers were, in turn, based on the work of his teacher, Malik ibn Anas, who was responsible for laying the foundations of the Malikite school. To these, 'Abd al-Rahman's answers, Sahnun added various relevant hadith to provide proof for the opinions expressed.

The Maghrib and Spain were among the earliest regions to accept the doctrines of the Malikite school of law, and it became the official rite of the Umayyad dynasty in Andalusia.

Another, slightly earlier volume with the same text was sold in these Rooms, 11 October 2005, lot 32.
