This unusual piece is made of a base metal, probably tin, which has then been plated in two colours of gold, together with niello, and has a central inset pierced silver panel. It is difficult to establish its original purpose. While it is of box form, the top cannot be removed. The only clue is the rectangular apertures each side of the body which would be consistent with a leather strap passing through the centre.
