The style of the dagger, especially with the band of turquoises at the base of the hilt, is very typically that of Bokhara daggers of the 19th century (Johannes Kalter and Margareta Pavaloi (eds.), Heirs to the Silk Road, Uzbekistan, London 1997, pl.341, p.183; or, a finer example, Oriental Splendour, exhibition catalogue, Hamburg, 1993, no.137, pp.198-9). The inscription however clearly identifies the owner as Major Sahibzada Mir Ghulam 'Ali Khan Talpur (1891-1941). It is very possible that the dagger, of earlier manufacture, was presented to him and that he inserted his own name at that time, following the tradition of his family with their renowned love of fine weapons.
