Lot Essay

A pendant of very similar form is in the al-Sabah Collection, Kuwait (Manuel Keene and Salam Kaoukji, Treasury of the World, London, 2001, no.1.10, p.23). The work there however gives much more prominence to the gemstones and less to the design. Here the flowers linked by their stems are also reminiscent to those in a different technique of inlay popular at the Safavid court in the 17th century (Vladimir Loukonine and Anatoli Ivanov, L'Art persan, Bournemouth, 1995, no.217, p.212 for example). It is interesting to note that a Safavid small covered box of this technique was in the collection of the Nizam of Hyderabad (sold Habsburg Feldman, Geneva, 29 June 1988, lot 278).
